History of 618 Athol Street"The Hardy Boy" House
1914 |
618 Athol Street was built in 1914 as a wedding present for Olive and Graydon Goodfellow from her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wilkins. Graydon Goodfellow, together with his father Charles A. Goodfellow, published the Whitby newspaper known as the Whitby Gazette and Chronicle from 1906 until the amalgamation of the Whitby newspaper with the Oshawa paper, with the result being the Oshawa Times Chronicle, later the Oshawa Times, which published continuously until 1994. Charles and Mary Goodfellow lived across the street at 221 Trent Street. |
1929 |
The Goodfellows sold 618 Athol Street to Nellie MacConnell for $10,500.00, and took back a mortgage for $4,000.00. Perhaps as a result of the depression, Ms. MacConnell appears to have defaulted on the mortgage, and a quit-claim deed in favour of Olive Goodfellow was registered in 1932. |
1934 |
Olive Goodfellow sold to Dr. George H. Stevenson on April 23rd, 1934 for $6,000.00. Dr. Stevenson was the superintendent of the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. It would appear that he was transferred to London shortly after purchasing. Dr. Stevenson later became the first Canadian President of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Stevenson sold for $6,000.00 to Lilias Cuthbertson Stevens on December 31st, 1934. We are not sure if the Stevens family occupied the house, or for what period. |
1936 |
Lilias Stevens sold the house to Reverend Hugh Crozier on September 16th, 1936 for $6,000.00. Reverend Crozier did not move into the house immediately - the house had been rented, likely by Stevens, to Leslie McFarlane (original author of the Hardy Boys books under pen name 'Franklin W. Dixon'), for an 11 month period. The lease was entered into on September 2nd, 1936, as this excerpt for that date from Mr. McFarlane's diary indicates:
"Looked at Whitby houses this morning, found a good one and signed up for it for 11 months."
The McFarlane family moved in on October 1st, 1936, as this diary excerpt for that date indicates:
"Out to Whitby by bus with Brian this morning. The furniture van arrived at five o'clock and we just got in by dark, set up a bed and slept in the new house. It is even lovelier than I remembered it. Brian and I both dead tired tonight. Arranged for water, light, phone, post office box, etcetera.
'Brian' - Mr. McFarlane's son, is a sports author and is well known for his Hockey Night in Canada commentaries. On the next day (October 2nd), Leslie McFarlane wrote:
"Amy [his wife] and the girls arrived at 11 o'clock. Amy thinks the house is grand."
Leslie McFarlane wrote at least one of the Hardy Boys books - "A Figure in Hiding", at 618 Athol Street. He wrote, in his diary, on October 12th:
"Mailed out my story and a lot of letters but got no mail myself other than a copy of 'The Sinister Sign Post', the latest Hardy Boys book. Then began work on the new Hardy tome ['A Figure in Hiding']."

1937 |
Likely in September of 1937, Reverend Crozier and his wife Mary moved into the house as their retirement home. Reverend Crozier was a United Church Minister, with various charges locally and around the country. Mary Crozier died in 1954, after 51 years of marriage. Hugh Crozier died in 1965 at age 92. |
1965 |
Hugh Crozier sold, for $25,900.00, to Ronald Deeth, Melvin Goreski, and John Miller, in trust. To this point, the house included the lot on which it now sits and the lot now occupied by the house immediately to the west. Deeth, Goreski, and Miller transferred the entire property to their holding company -'Whitby-Trent Limited', and severed off the lands to the west. The Miller family occupied the house until January of 1973.
